Our Labs

We provide access to UBC EM’s world-class facilities located on UBC’s Vancouver Campus.

Bio-Imaging Facility

The Bioimaging Facility is a comprehensive light and electron microscopy facility that offers commercial services as a trained-user operated facility or a technician-assisted facility. Our infrastructure is designed primarily for projects involving biological samples and we offer imaging technology for live-cell imaging, 3D TEM tomography as well as both cryoTEM and cryoSEM. The Bioimaging Facility can also provide the highest quality sample processing techniques such as high-pressure freezing and freeze fracture.

Centre for High-Throughput Phenogenomics

The Centre for High-Throughput Phenogenomics offers a comprehensive suite of imaging technologies. Its broad goal provides two- and three-dimensional information and analysis about the structure of specimens using scanning electron microscopy, optical imaging, X-ray imaging, and mass spectroscopy.

The Centre is a core facility and welcomes collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects from across universities, research organizations, and corporate users.

Electron Microbeam & X-Ray Diffraction Facility (EMXDF)

The EMXDF offers analytical services for solid samples (geological, mineral, pharmaceutical, other materials such as superconductor, semiconductor, corrosion) to academic and commercial users. Services include quantitative crystalline phase analysis using XRD, qualitative analysis of crystal phases, high reliability analysis of individual element concentrations, and analytical scanning electron microscopy. Our scanning electron microscope has a cathodeluminescence detector most useful for geological applications and EDS for qualitative elemental analysis. Training is available on the XRD.
